Description
Sergiev Posad is one of the most ancient settlements in the Moscow Region. The Trinity-Sergius Monastery, which gave birth to the town itself, was founded in the mid-14th century, when Russian land had been groaning under the Golden Horde's yoke for already over a century. The monastery's founder Sergius of Radonezh (1314-1392), leading the life of a zealot and supporting the idea of rallying the independent principalities round Moscow to fight against conquerors of all sorts, had won universal recognition among the Russian people.

The defence of the monastery against the Polish-Lithuanian invaders at the beginning of the 17th century, had won it countrywide renown. For 16 months the monastery's defenders beat back in complete isolation regular troops with nearly tenfold preponderance of forces and came out the winners.

The young Tsar Peter on two occasions took refuge behind the monastery's walls fleeing from rebellious streltsy (1682,1689), and from here he began to rule the country all on his own turning it into powerful state.

The monastery's privilaged status its huge wealth allowed it to build unremittingly inviting the country's best masters, who created an ensemble of magnificent monuments of Russian architecture.

Villages and settlements (slobody) sprang up and clustered around the monastery. In due time they formed a single settlement (posad), which in 1782 was granted the status of a town. Rectugular blocks of houses, which can still be seen in the centre of the modern town, came to replace the haphazardous network of old steets.

Parish churches, dominating over the stump huts and courtyards girdling the monastery, formed an imposing architectural ensemble of the monastery's citadel, lending the town's landscape charm and uniqueness.

The town is also famed for its toymaking factory and the Toy Museum, carrying on the traditions of folk art crafts. A monastery and seminaries are functioning at the Lavra once again since 1946. The Trinity-Sergius Monastery has regained the significance of a major centre of the Russian Ortodox Church.
