Description
The Russian essayist Ivan Aksakov wrote: «The history of Russia cannot be fully understood without a glimpse at the private history of a Russian family». The best illustration of this thought is the Abramtsevo estate near Moscow.

In the 19th century it was owned by the Aksakov family and later by the prominent industrialist Savva Mamontov. The family annals are closely intertwined with Russian history and culture. In 1920 the estate was turned into a museum.

«A lovely village», «a miracle», «a heavenly place» - that's how writer Sergei Aksakov described Abramtsevo after moving there with his family in 1843. An inveterate hunter and fisherman, he was delighted by the beauty and fertility of surrounding nature. The estate was situated not far from one of the most venerated Orthodox shrines - the Trinity-St Sergius Laura. By their spirit and way of life the Aksakovs belonged to Slavophils - members of the Russian intelligentsia who advocated Slavic and specifically Russian culture over that of the West.

Nikolai Gogol, Ivan Turgenev and other outstanding writers, actors, philosophers and prominent public figures were frequent quests in Abramtsevo famous for its literary gatherings, theatrical productions and political debates.

After Ivan Aksakov's death Abramtsevo went over to the millionaire and patron of the arts Savva Mamontov.

Savva Mamontov was an art patron of a peculiar sort: he could feel a talent. The world-famous Russian opera singer Fedor Shalyapin, distinguished painters such as Korovin, Vasnetsov, Serov, Vrubel and a whole constellation of others owe much of their success to Savva Mamontov. Many painters lived and worked in Abramtsevo for months. They formed the so-called «Abramtsevo circle» advocating the revival of national heritage. The Slavic epos, folk tales, the architecture of Orthodox churches, the Russian village acquired a new meaning in their creation.

Today there is an applied arts school operating on the estate. It continues the traditions of classes in ceramics and wood-craving organized by Yelena Polenova and funded by Mamontov. The museum maintains contact with his numerous descendants.
