Description
Jurevets as the ancient town is included in the list of the historical cities of the Russian Federation. It was founded according to the legend in 1225 by grant duke of Vladimir, Jury. The town was named Jurev-Povolsky, i.e. the Volga Region. Later the town began to call Jurevets.
Jurevets was the town with a fighting fortress on the Vladimir-Suzdal province. The ancient coat of arms of Jurevets is the shield with a tower-fortress, expressing a military feature of the town during centuries.
Nowadays in Jurevets it is possible to see the remaining shafts of the last fortress – The White Town. It is located on the mountain above the river area. It is one of the most picturesque places of Jurevets with quite ponds and pine trees. The White Town is ranked as a rare moment of Russian military-engineering arts.
The Jurevets suburb was under the mountain in the XVI-XVII centuries. Above there were only fortresses. Monasteries surrounded it from different sides.
Jurevets was the known trading center. People sold bread, fish, salt, meat and other products. Among inhabitants there were many military people, trading people, fish hunters.
At the end of the 18th century it became a district city of the Kostroma province. Jurevets became the burlak center on the Volga.
Development of shipping company on the Volga almost stopped the burlak and other seasonal works. History of Jurevets is closely connected with its place on the crossing a waterway of the Volga and the Big way to the North and Ural.
In 1952 the decision of construction of man-made see was accepted. The construction of the dam was completed in 1957. And now a three-kilometer dam protects coast part of Jurevets from flooding by the Volga waters.
The inhabitants of Jurevets are proud of their fellow countrymen, among them: Andrey Tarkovsky, Vesniny, Alexander Ron, Reformatski and others.
Now Jurevets is one of the most non-polluting areas in Ivanovo region and the central Russia. The population of the town is 13,4 thousand people.
